The Ecosoft Smart Grid Controller 1 (SGC 1) is a device that is able to operate a heat pump to keep the heating costs as low as possible, by benefitting from energy price fluctuations during the day. Because cheap energy is more than often green energy (solar and wind energy), there are benefits for the environment as well.

Every day, the SGC creates a planning with “moments to switch” and takes the following into account:

• Your location (where outside temperature and prices depend on)
• The efficiency of your heat pump at certain outside temperatures
• The electricity prices during 24 hours of a day
• The efficiency of your gas boiler (if present)
• The current gas price
• Your preferences filled out in the energy planner.

The SGC is suitable for hybrid heat pumps as well. For example, if at some time during the day, gas heating by the gas boiler is cheaper than the electrical power heating by the heat pump, the SGC can switch the heat pump in a lower operating mode.

The SGC should only be installed by an expert installer.

How does the Smart Grid Controller work?

For an all electrical heat pump

When creating a plan, the Ecosoft Smart Grid Controller takes into account the electricity prices (48 per day in the UK), efficiency of the heat pump and outside temperatures (depending on your city). Depending on this data and your preferences, it will create the most beneficial “switching schedule” for the day. At the proper moments, the Smart Grid Controller will switch your heat pump to a higher or lower working mode. The goal is to save costs.

For a hybrid heat pump

In a hybrid system, an hybrid heat pump and a gas boiler work together to supply the required heat. When creating a plan, the Ecosoft Smart Grid Controller takes into account the electricity prices, outside temperatures, efficiency of the heat pump, the gas price, and the efficiency of the gas boiler. During hours when gas heating is cheaper than electrical heating, the SGC will set the heat pump into a lower operating mode, indirectly invoking the gas boiler to jump in to supply heat at lower costs.
